Books to Read

If there was one book you were to read it should be FRESH. This book is designed specifically as a guide for Christian students. It takes you through the 5 most key areas:

  • Faith - What do we believe?
  • Relationships - What does God say about relationships?
  • Evangelism - How can you go about sharing your faith?
  • Studies - What does God say about what you are studying?
  • Holiness - What areas of student life does God call you to be holy in?

Other top books you should read as a Christian student:

  1. Out of the Saltshaker, Rebecca Manley Pippert, Inter-Varsity Press (IVP) - This book is designed to show you how evangelism is not something you 'do' every now and then, but should be a way of life. Great if you want to know where to get started sharing the gospel with friends.
  2. Shining Like Stars, Lindsay Brown, IVP - This book tells the stories of what God is doing in different universities around the world. Lindsay Brown was until recently the General Secretary of IFES.
  3. Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God, J. I. Packer, IVP - This book addresses the issue: If God is in control of all things, then what is the point of praying and what is the point of sharing the gospel? Surely God will work without me! The book looks at what our role and God's role is in evangelism.
  4. Let the Nations be Glad, John Piper, IVP - This book will expand your global vision. The goal of missions is to bring the nations to worship the greatness and glory of God. This will challenge you to take the gospel to the nations!
  5. God's Big Picture, Vaughan Robertbs, IVP - This book takes you through the big story line of the Bible. How does it all fit together? How is the whole Bible all about Jesus? It's a simple read with lots of diagrams!
  6. The Cross of Christ, John Stott, IVP - This is a meatier book on Jesus' death on the cross. There are four parts to the book: 1. How should we approach the subject of the cross? 2. What exactly happened on the cross? 3. What did the cross achieve? 4. How should the cross transform the way we live as Christians? This will take you longer to read, but it is well worth the effort - how about reading it with a friend?
  7. A Call to Spiritual Reformation, Don Carson, IVP - This book set out to transform your prayer life! Based on some talks originally given at CICCU many years ago, this book examines Paul's prayers recorded in the New Testament and then draws out how this should revolutionise our prayers.
  8. Dig Deeper!, Nigel Beynon & Andrew Sach, IVP - This book shows you how to get much more out of the Bible. It takes you through a number of 'tools' which help you open up the meaning of the Bible. Lots of worked examples and pictures!
  9. Don't Waste Your Life, John Piper, IVP - In this book John Piper declares that God created us to live with a single passion: joyfully to display his supreme excellence in all spheres of life. The wasted life - a life that counts for nothing - is one without this passion. Are you going to waste your life?
  10. Know and Tell the Gospel, John Chapman, The Good Book Co. - This book does what its title says: It helps you to understand the gospel better and to explain it more clearly. It would be a good read alongside Out of the Saltshaker!
  11. What is an Evangelical?, D. M. Lloyd-Jones, The Good Book Co. - This short book examines the question: What is an evangelical? It looks at what we believe and why these beliefs are worth standing for and defending.
  12. From Cambridge to the World, Robert Horn & Oliver Barclay, IVP - This book records the exciting story of how the CU movement began in Cambridge and exploded worldwide. Fully of anecdotes from the history of the CICCU. Previous generations of CICCU members certainly left a challenging legacy to live up to!
  13. Holiness, J. C. Ryle, Evangelical Press - A challenging book about holiness, which speaks with a cutting edge into our culture.
  14. Communion With God, John Owen, Christian Heritage - A book that is designed to help us enjoy a relationship with the Trinity. Owen looks at what the Bible teaches about the Father, Son and Spirit in turn and what it means to enjoy communion with each of them.
  15. Calvin on Prayer, John Calvin, The Good Book Co. - The section on prayer in Calvin's institutes has been published separately. This essay on prayer puts to shame most modern writings on prayer. Calvin explores what an amazing privilege it is to approach God as our Father.
  16. Bruised Reed, Richard Sibbes, Banner of Truth - Written by a Cambridge man, but this is Biblical teaching applied to the heart. This book will help you see that you cannot know Christ enough, that Christ should define our existence as our Saviour.
  17. The Glory of Christ, Peter Lewis, Paternoster - An excellent book helping us to understand who Jesus is. Packed full of material to digest.
  18. Of the Mortification of Sin (contained in Overcoming Sin and Temptation), John Owen, Crossway Books - Owen's classic on defeating sin. This is doctrine applied to practical living. What does it mean for Christians to battle against sin?
  19. The Bondage of the Will, Martin Luther, James Clarke & Co. - This is a brilliant exposition of the problem of sin.
  20. The Holy Spirit, Sinclair Ferguson, IVP - This book sets out the Bible's teaching on the person of the Holy Spirit. A really excellent read on this subject, well grounded in scripture.
  21. Redemption - Accomplished and Applied, John Murray, Banner of Truth - A short book which sets out what the Bible teaches about the work of Christ. The first half looks at what Jesus accomplished for us, the second half looks at how that work is applied to us. Murray has the knack of expressing things simply.
